Templeton Elementary School Tigard-Tualatin School District | Tigard, OR

Templeton Elementary School – a replacement for an outmoded school – shares a campus with its cohort Twality Middle School, which also needed replacing. Working closely with the community, Arcadis designed the two new schools in tandem. The first phase of construction was to build the new 600-student, K-5 James Templeton Elementary School, thus allowing demolition of the existing elementary and opening up its site for construction of Twality Middle School.

Following the development of the program and conceptual plan, focus groups comprised of students, staff, and other stakeholders carried the design further, meeting to concentrate on the individual needs of each zone of the project.

The building was integrated seamlessly with the site, providing ways for children to experience the classrooms from the inside out and from outside in. The scale is broken down to suit younger children and create places for small moments of discovery.
